Our department of gastroenterology comprises of highly skilled and experienced gastroenterologist to cater for all above conditions. This unit provides both inpatient and outpatient services for patients who need an endoscopic procedure. An endoscopic procedure is a nonsurgical procedure used to examine a person’s digestive tract.
Gastroenterology and Hepatology Department provides a holistic approach to patient care whereby medical care is provided by multi-disciplinary teams and has close links with other Medical and Surgical services, Diagnostic Services, Cancer Services and Nursing Services. The Gastroenterology/Hepatology Department also offers diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy service including upper GI endoscopy, colonoscopy, Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio-Pancreatography (ERCP), Double Balloon Enteroscopy (DBE) and Endoscopic Ultrasonography (EUS). Also provides a comprehensive range of services, focusing on diagnostic and advanced therapeutic endoscopy including luminal stenting. The function of the GI Unit is to provide quality diagnostic and therapeutic gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures. The function of the Unit is to provide planned day care endoscopic and outpatient services to patients following GP/OPD referral or as an inpatient.

The team of gastroenterologists and surgeons use endoscopic procedures to diagnose and treat many disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. These procedures include:
- Gastroscopy
- Colonoscopy
- Flexible sigmoidoscopy
- Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
- Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)
- Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG)
The GI unit also provides other diagnostic and treatment services such as:
- Urea breath test
- Iron infusions
- Infliximab infusion
This unit also evaluate and manage conditions of the biliary and pancreatic ducts, including stones and tumours. We provide colonoscopy examinations too. The purpose is to ensure that endoscopy services have the skills, resources and motivation necessary to provide high quality, timely, patient-centred care. This is achieved through robust quality assurance assessments and by setting standards for individual endoscopists and endoscopy training. Cancer genetics is becoming increasingly influential in cancer detection and prevention. Early diagnosis leads to better outcomes for patients and their families. We wiil be soon providing family screening programmes for hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (Lynch syndrome) and familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP).
